Nickel alloy INCONEL® 601 – Properties, applications and technical data
INCONEL® 601 is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy used in applications where high heat and corrosion resistance is required.
A distinctive feature is its very good oxidation resistance at high temperatures. The alloy also has good resistance to water corrosion, high mechanical strength and is relatively easy to form, process and weld.
Properties of INCONEL® 601
INCONEL® 601 (UNS N06601 / Werkstoffnr 2.4851) is a general construction material for demanding high-temperature environments.
Thanks to its combination of oxidation resistance and mechanical stability, the material is often used where standard stainless steels are not sufficient in long-term thermal operation.
- Type: Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloy
- Alloy: Ni-Cr-Fe (INCONEL® 601)
- Structure: Austenitic nickel-based alloy
- Alternative names: Alloy 601, Inconel 601, UNS N06601
- UNS: N06601
- Material number: 2.4851
Advantages
- Very good oxidation resistance at high temperatures
- Good mechanical strength and stability during long-term thermal operation
- Good corrosion resistance in many industrial environments
- Relatively good formability and machinability
- Good weldability compared to many other high-temperature alloys
Limitations
- Higher material cost than standard stainless steels
- Not optimal in extremely sulfur-rich environments at high temperatures
- Choice of process and heat treatment affects final properties
Typical applications
Industrial furnaces & heat treatment
Furnace parts, fixtures, muffles, burner tubes and components in hot gas zones.
Chemical process industry
Equipment where temperature, oxidation and corrosion stress the material.
Energy & power generation
Components in high-temperature systems where long service life and reliability are required.
Aerospace
High-temperature components and parts with oxidation resistance requirements.
Corrosion and oxidation resistance
INCONEL® 601 is particularly suitable for oxidizing atmospheres and environments with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
The alloy is often used where standard stainless materials are not sufficient, and where oxidation resistance is crucial for service life and reliability.
Environments where INCONEL® 601 performs well:
- Oxidizing high temperature environments
- Industrial furnaces and heat treatment processes
- Thermal stress during long service life
- Applications where oxidation resistance is a critical factor
Environments to avoid:
- Highly sulfur-rich environments at high temperatures
- Applications where simpler materials provide sufficient performance (cost aspect)
